Your brake pads are an important factor of your braking system and they are a part that you should monitor on a regular basis. Friction is caused when the brake pads compress against the brake rotors which causes your vehicle to stop.Which means brake pads work really hard, really often..
The amount of pressure that is required of them to stop a moving vehicle is extreme and gives off a lot of heat which slowly degrades the brake pads.
Worn brake pads means impaired braking which is dangerous on the roads. That's why regular inspection and measuring of the state of your brake pads is essential.

How do I know when it's time for a Brake Pad Replacement?
If your brakes squeal - that can be a warning that your brake pads are due for an assessment; many pads have a small metal piece embedded in them which will scratch on the disc when your brake pads are getting thin, causing that high pitch noise. However, it's not advised to wait until you hear noises to get your pads assessed, we advise having your brakes inspected at every service.
It is important to remember that unusual brake sounds are not only caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.
At Palmerston Mechanical Centre we offer a free 65 Point Safety Check with every car service. As part of our Safety Check we inspect the brake pads for wear and inform you if they call for replacing. We can also recommend the right pad for your driving style and conditions.
How long before I will need to replace the brake pads?
Brake Pads can can last anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can change because of a number of causes such as; driving style, local conditions, towing heavy loads. If your brake pads are wearing out prematurely your mechanic might advise using a heat resistant or heavier duty brake pad more suited to your vehicle.
